More than just coffee

Vietnamese coffee: the most important preparation methods

It all revolves around the Phin filter: the same basic brew creates very different drinks, from the sweet, creamy Cà Phê Sữa Đá to the pure Cà Phê Đen and the dessert-like Cà Phê Trứng. Pick a variation below and follow the step-by-step guide.

How the Phin filter works

Four simple steps to the basic recipe, the foundation for all coffee variations below.

How the Phin filter works: Parts

1. Parts

The Phin filter consists of a cup, perforated base, press plate and lid. Once taken apart, the setup makes sense in seconds.

How the Phin filter works: Fill

2. Fill

Set the filter on a cup or glass, add 2-3 tbsp of coffee grounds and shake gently so they lie evenly. Then pour about 1 cm of hot water on top and wait 20-30 seconds, which opens up the coffee.

How the Phin filter works: Press

3. Press

Place the press plate on top and press down only gently. The grounds should be lightly compacted but still let water through.

How the Phin filter works: Pour

4. Pour

Top up with the rest of the hot water, put the lid on and let it drip for 4-5 minutes.
